Awarded 2018 International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD)This project is the outcome of my typographic exploration for the 2018 istd brief ‘Food for thought’. By looking at my own personal favourite Israeli foods, I started investigating dishes where there is a disagreement and different claims about their origins in my home country.
Hummus is a fundamental feature of Levantine cuisine. A simple, everyday dish consumed across different countries and cultures. In Israel, Lebanon and Palestine it is considered a national dish. As a basic culinary component shared by countries who are often on hostile terms, hummus has acquired a symbolic political dimension. The adoption of this essentially Arabic food by Israelies reflects the social, cultural and political history of the Israeli state and society.
